“In this time of pain, the complete ward team was such a support to us. All the members are so kind, concerned and devoted. Especially their emotional connectivity provided us and the kid a great sigh of relief. Doctor treated our kid so well which boosted her will of recovery and also supported our sinking emotions. We are grateful.”

In the busy and sometimes tense atmosphere of DOCTORS Hospital and Medical Centre, an extraordinary story unfolded. It’s a story of bravery, strength, and the dedicated medical team at the hospital. They didn’t just bring a healthy baby into the world; they also gave a young mother, fighting with cancer, a second chance at life.
Arooj Fatima, a 29-year-old woman, came to DHMC as her last hope for becoming a mother. She was pregnant and also dealing with invasive breast cancer. After undergoing chemotherapy elsewhere, complications arose – fever, diarrhea, and jaundice. At DHMC, doctors suspected a serious condition called chemotherapy-induced hepatitis, which could be life-threatening. Arooj wasn’t just a patient anymore; she was a mother, a fighter, and her unborn child was a symbol of hope. The hospital’s team, made up of experts in gynecology, medicine, hematology, anesthesia, and oncology, came together to help.
They faced tough challenges, like severe oligohydramnios, a shrunken womb, and a mother weakened by illness. Despite the difficulties, their goal was clear – to save both lives. Arooj battled dengue, drug-induced liver injury, and an enlarged spleen. Her oxygen levels dropped, breaths became shallow, and the possibility of not resuscitating (DNV/DNR) loomed. But even in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), hope persisted.
Then, on December 13th, a miracle happened. Through a carefully done C-section, a tiny warrior, a baby boy, was born, weighing only 1.1 kg. This was a testament to Arooj’s strength and the doctors’ belief.
For 17 days, the DHMC team supported her in the ICU, fighting for her breath, laughter, and future. On December 26th, Arooj left DHMC as both a mother and a survivor. The cancer was not fully defeated, but it was under control.
Arooj’s story is more than just a medical success; it’s a tribute to the unwavering commitment of the DHMC team. It gives hope to mothers facing tough situations, reminding us that even in the darkest times, miracles can happen.
