Nephrology and Dialysis
The Department of Nephrology at Doctors Hospital provide a complete range of consultative, diagnostic and treatment services for patients with kidney diseases. The scope of care encompasses all stages of kidney disease, from earliest detectable changes in kidney function through End Stage Renal Disease. The division’s goal is to provide the highest quality care while helping patients manage their condition. Kidney failure is often associated with other medical issues, such as heart, lung liver diseases, cancer etc and other surgical or obstetrical disorders. Patients with a history of renal disease who are on dialysis and undergo major general or cardiac surgery are at high risk for complications. The center for dialysis works closely with other Doctors Hospital specialties, addressing a patient’s kidney failure prior to surgery and taking appropriate steps to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Dialysis:
Dialysis is a life saving procedures for patients whose kidneys are not working properly, in which excess water and waste products are removed from the body. There are two types of dialysis:
- Hemodialysis:
In Hemodialysis blood is drawn out from the patient through a tube into a special machine which filters the blood and pumps it back into the body. The blood is taken and sent back through access sources like catheter (inserted by doctor in neck or thigh vein) and fistula (made by surgeon in arm). The procedure can last several hours during which a patient’s entire blood courses through the machine numerous times. Most patient need Hemodialysis three times a week for four hours each session.
- Peritoneal Dialysis:
In peritoneal dialysis, blood is cleaned inside the body. The doctor will do surgery to place a plastic tube called a catheter into abdomen to make an access.
During the treatment, abdominal area (peritoneal cavity) is slowly filled with dialysate (fluid) through the catheter. The blood stays in the arteries and veins that line peritoneal cavity. Extra fluid and waste products are drawn of blood and into the dialysate.
Dialysis Unit 1:
The Dialysis Unit at Doctors Hospital is part of the renal replacement therapy program to help patients suffering from kidney failure. It caters for renal patients under Nephrology Consultant, Dr. Abeera Mansur.
The Dialysis Unit operates from 8am to 10 pm Monday to Saturday.
Please call 0423-530-2701-14, 0423-111-22-33-77 at extension 101 for appointments.
The Dialysis unit has 8 Fresenius dialysis machines. Six machines are dedicated for patients without any liver virus (hepatitis B and C) in their body. And two machines are dedicated for Hepatitis C reactive patients.
It is a technological sophisticated system with a special design that allows constant patient observation and timely interventions to prevent complications.
To maintain high standards in dialysis care, the Dialysis centre carries out microbiological analysis on water and dialysate quality bimonthly, confirming to the European Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)
The Dialysis centre has always aimed to set the international standard to achieve best dialysis care for our patients.
Services offered by the department.
Dialysis Unit 2:
In Dialysis unit 2 we use advanced next generation Fresenius 5008 machines with specially imported
tubing’s and dialyzers. These machines are unique to our unit and not installed anywhere in Pakistan.
This has ensured further efficacy and enhanced safety for patients allowing self adjustments in the wake
of cardiovascular instability. Haemodialysis is an essential component of acute medical therapy for not
only patients with medical ailments but sometimes also for patients undergoing procedures like
coronary intervention and life threatening surgical emergencies. We have machines available for
hepatitis B and C positive patients and are open seven days a week for regular and emergency patients.
As a mark of care and quality we regularly receive not only patients from other cities but from different
countries. We are contracted with UK National Health Service for provision of dialysis service to patients
holidaying in Pakistan.
